I finally gave in and tried learning how to design a video game. Took a class at Sacramento City Community College–SacCity for short. I am still not sure how I feel about it.
I am not an avid video gamer. Not much of a gamer at all, actually. However, this idea has been around for a while, and the idea of turning it into a video game followed. Earlier, I wrote about how I set up the game in a free game design site. Then I let that go. Don’t even remember why, but I am not surprised. I do that a lot.
This time around, though, I thought, since it was a class, that I might actually understand–if not the reason I let it go, then whether or not I would pursue it. I am still not decided.
Part of the reason for my ambivalence is that we had to do an analog version of the game and that was an entirely unexpected pleasure. I made a game! Or rather I made a game board with cards and player pieces. And play-tested it alone. Not a bad idea since I actually enjoyed the process.
I learned a lot from that session. Mostly that I did not know how to play it, yet. There were parts of the game that I had not thought out fully and that showed up in the play-test. I still have an option and opportunity to play-test it with others. That will happen once I have a better idea of how the game is actually played.
I have used the labyrinth for another activity and that event went really well. Surprisingly. I don’t expect to have that kind of activity again, but I still want to hold on to what I did. I’ll be sharing that in another, related post.
